There’s also the Skykomish River and nearby lakes, parks, and hiking trails. Many of the residents praise Monroe’s rural atmosphere, though the city is growing rapidly and offers plenty of newer real estate for sale as well.  

Besides all of the new neighborhoods, there are many opportunities to purchase well-established homes, historical real estate, and buildable land as well. Monroe offers the east-side commuters very affordable housing prices if you’re looking for something with a lower budget. The city has recently been going through a large development phase which aims to promote the overall tourism industry and economic development” to revive old downtown into its former glory. 

Speaking of old downtown, Monroe was founded back in 1864 originally as the town of Park Place. The area was valuable because of proximity to all 3 rivers, as well as among several existing settlements in the Tulaco Valley. Monroe’s origins consisted of various trading posts nestled along the river and mainly used by the Skykomish people. 

Monroe eventually became a suburban bedroom community, serving commuters to Everett, Seattle, and the Eastside. It is home to the Monroe Correctional Complex, which absorbed the original reformatory in 1998, and the Evergreen State Fair, which runs annually in the summer.
